Bahamian diving legend Stuart Cove will be taking to the Inspiration Stage to talk about his career, which notably includes being the ‘go-to’ guy for Hollywood when they want to film in and under the water, as well as a dab hand at sinking shipwrecks for scuba divers to explore and the marine life of the Bahamas to inhabit.
Born and raised in the Bahamas, Stuart’s father taught him to dive in their family pool at the tender age of five, and he developed his love of Watersports during the family’s many trips to the Exuma Cays and the Bahama Out Islands. He began working as a ‘fin boy’ on a tourist snorkelling boat when he was just ten. After leaving uni in his second year, he started up Coral Harbour Fivers using a few tanks and one of his father’s boats.
His big break came in 1979 when he was hired as a diver on the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, which enabled him to buy his first boat. Business boomed, and by 1992, he was established at the South Ocean Golf and Beach Resort Dive Centre.
He is now the ‘go-to’ expert for Hollywood when it comes to shooting on and under the water, and has been involved in films such as Never Say Never Again, The World Is Not Enough, In the Blue, Casino Royale, After the Sunset, Deep Blue Sea, and Flipper. He has taught many celebrities to dive, including Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Roger Moore, Daryl Hannah, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Robert Redford, Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Pierce Brosnan and many, many more.
Stuart has also sunk more than 22 artificial reefs around the Bahamas, providing habitats for marine life as well as sunken attractions for divers.
He also started the Children on the Reef programme, which to date has helped over 30,000 underprivileged Bahamian children.
